Ndwara Community Resource Centre
The library is temporarely located in a small room until the main library building is complete. This is a wonderful project which deserves support as it will benefit a large rural population. We were delighted to spend time with the library staff and supporters. This is truely an essential project for this entire community.
The new library needs a roof, the next most critical need is for furniture and books. The library management would like these to be built locally to encourage skill development and employment, particularly among young people.
While the library has an ongoing need for books, they regularly receive book donations from Canada. They are limited, however, to books in English. Therefore, funds for the purchase of books in Luo or Kiswahili would be helpful.
This library is committed to being a centre for the development of the entire community. Therefore they are determined to create opportunities for skill development, apprenticeships and employment, particularly for young adults who experience a high level of unemployment. The library has been built by young men from the village, under the supervision of a qualified mason; and the hope is that the furniture can also be done in this way. The library has already supported the start-up of a secondary school for the village, sponsorship of several students who are orphans or very poor, and some start-up businesses.
The co-founders of the library are both professional librarians, and are committed to overseeing and training staff and volunteers to provide the highest level of service. The library has a few laptops computers and provide some training. There is already an impact of this thehnology with the increased number of people (old and young) from the village with email accounts and FaceBook pages.
