Rehema Day Care Library
The library was founded by the local chief of the neighborhood and has been in existence since 2012. It is a registered community-based organization under the direction of pastor Erastus Jairo Omukhango. It is located within a primary school and both the school and the library have a mutually beneficial relationship. Its mission and vision is to unleash the full potential of children and adults in the area.
During our visit we were touched by the dedication of the staff and the number of adults studying. The library has no Internet connection and one old computer. As you see in the pictures, the library is made of metal sheets, which says a lot about the surroundings. The nearby orphanage could also greatly benefit from an improved library.
The total annual expenses to run this library is KSH 48,000 (USD $560) per year. Imagine how much good they could do with some support. So far, they have received only KSH 7,000 (USD $80) in donations during this past year. People living in the neighborhood make on average less than one dollar per day. The local population is composed of 50% children. The Korogocho slum has a high crime rate and offers very little opportunity.

SUPPORT PROVIDED BY ATS | On May 28, 2014: ATS provided content relevant books, a computer and an internet connect. December, 2013: ATS provided consultation on how to make better use of their space. We also recommended a sign outside to advertise the library. We encouraged the management to do more promotional activities and try to get local donations, which is a challenge in itself. With a little bit of funds, we could provide much more to this wonderful library project. |
