Nyalenda Community Library


This is a recent library initiative in the Nyalenda slum in Kisumu (Western Kenya). The library welcomes about 100 users each day, mostly consisting of young school children. There is about 150 curriculumn books and the library could host many more. They have no computers or Internet. The library partners with two local schools to which they regularly lend books. The library also gives coaching session to the community for free. They support themselves by offering toilet services for public users and also by selling clean water to resident of the slum. Their team is made of local volonteers who run the library.

Year founded The organization was founded and registered as a youth group in 2007, and registered as a Community Based Organization in 2013. The library was initiated in January 2013 and begun official operations in June 2013.
